Volunteer for our centre

Mackay RDA would not be the successful organisation that it is today with the valuable and wonderful volunteers that have become part of this very worthwhile cause. Volunteers commit many dedicated hours to the functioning and ongoing activities and duties that are a daily part of MRDA. MRDA provides all current up to date training for all volunteers, which every area a volunteer chooses to work in.

Our senior coach has a saying that even if a volunteer can give one hour a week of their time, that time is invaluable to the organisation. Our volunteers come from all walks of lives, there are volunteers from many varied and diverse backgrounds. Each person that comes to the organisation brings with them: special skills, diverse and lengthy working history, life time experiences – every single person that walks through our gate – or contacts us on the phone – has something unique to offer MRDA and our very important clients and families. MRDA maintains a joyous happy working environment, we display and demonstrate an up to date and extremely high attitude to workplace health and safety.

MRDA is not just about horses and riding lessons. There are many other areas that we need your assistance with, such as:

  • Paddock maintenance / cleaning of troughs / picking up manure
  • Fencing/weed control/slashing paddocks/tree maintenance/painting
  • Fundraising / attending public events / public speaking / networking with other organisations
  • Horse care/tack cleaning and maintenance
  • Feeding of horses / tacking & grooming of horses / general horse care
  • Assisting in lessons / training to become a coach
  • Hostessing duties / shopping / general cleaning of building
  • Administration duties / funding submissions
  • Volunteer co-ordinations / inductions

All volunteers must complete a Level 1 induction. All volunteers over the age of 18 must have / or be prepared to obtain a blue work with children check card. Volunteers must be over the age of 12 to assist at the organisation.

Level 2 and Level 3 inductions are carried out by the Coach. This will enable you to obtain skills and knowledge working within the horse area.

You can choose a day (or days) to suit you and you can come for an hour or two – or for the whole session. Any time you can spare would be greatly appreciated.

If you would like to join us please contact MRDA and leave a message or email us.

Volunteer Testimonials

Lisa West – RDA Volunteer
“Being a person with a physical disability at 28, I sometimes felt that I didn’t have much to offer an organisation or business. I started with Mackay Riding for Disabled in 2003 and am still there! I work mainly in the administration area, but once you become involved with the RDA, you realise that there are many other duties and chores that are open to you. Riding for Disabled was at first a new organisation to me, but after all of these years working with wonderful dedicated volunteers, riders, families and other relevant stakeholders – I have become very attuned to what RDA is all about and just exactly what joys, pleasures and benefits that it brings not only to the volunteers, the riders but to their extended families, carers and other organisations. Just to see the beautiful smiles on all of the faces makes everything so worthwhile. Throughout the years that I have volunteered at MRDA, I have also made some lifetime enduring friendships. The whole RDA experience is one that I will never forget.”
